About
Women Aware's mission is to promote the safety and self-sufficiency of individuals and families affected by domestic violence in Middlesex County, New Jersey.
45 years strong, Women Aware stands on the shoulders of pioneers who opened a safe house in Middlesex County so women could escape the violence in their homes before it killed them. These indomitable founders and passionate advocates turned the spotlight on a crisis that no one wanted to talk about. Ours was the first, and remains the only, 24-hour emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence in the county.
Each year Women Aware shelters 200 victims in imminent danger at our emergency shelter; serves an additional 3,000 victims in non-residential programs—including legal advocacy, counseling, support groups, and children’s trauma reduction therapy; and responds to 9,000 calls through our 24-hour hotline. All our services are free and confidential. Women Aware is the lead agency for the Middlesex County Family Justice Center, first in the county and fifth in the state to bring multidisciplinary victim services under one roof as a best practice in the field of domestic violence intervention and prevention. The gateway to 20 community service providers, the FJC facilitates survivors’ direct access to wraparound services that help build the foundation for a self-sufficient life.
